Offterdinger was a disciple of Heinrich von Rustige. In the second half of the 19th century, Offterdinger illustrated numerous children's books, fairy tales, adventure stories and widely read newspapers. Indeed, Offterdinger is particularly famous for his illustrations of literary works such as E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, Till Eulenspiegel, Robinson Crusoe, the fairy tales of the Grimm Brothers and Gulliver's Travels. In 1874, he illustrated the first edition of Theodor Storm's short story Pole Poppenspäler in the magazine German Youth. Some of his illustrations are now in the Boston Harbor Museum.

Death : 12 January 1889 (at the age of 60) in Stuttgart, Germany.
